The 80’s what an era for style, music and technology. Not all of it was successful but it was an era of experimentation, exploration and most of all fun. The CASIO EG-5 is one of the innovations that didn’t quite catch on. With their background in keyboards watches and electronics they obviously thought 1985 was there time to hit the guitar worlr. Similar to the iconic CASIO SK-1, the EG-5 is a portable guitar with recording and playback facilities built in.
Its inbuilt cassette tape is the feature that makes the EG-5 especially unique. It can be used to record loops of your own playing so you could play along with yourself, a kind of archaic version of the loop pedal. Cassettes have obviously become obsolete, but they were the newest technology when the EG-5 was first introduced.
For me the inspiration is the shape, I love the angles with the curves, the mix of technology with a wood neck keeping it tactile and the way the shape look is defined by the features needed. I also love the bold branding and colour choices. It’s a Brutey and a shape that we look to explore and reinvent.
